History is Alive in Downtown Bangor!

Downtown Bangor Historic Photo Contest Winner Announced

Downtown Bangor is well recognized for its history, from the lumber trade to the great fire and beyond, Downtown’s architecture is a highlight of its history.  For this reason the Downtown Bangor Partnership (DBP) hosted a historic photo contest, in conjunction with the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s National Preservation Month. The photo contest began in late March and ran through April 30th.

DBP received nearly 100 photo submissions of downtown landmarks from over 50 area photography amateurs, professionals and hobbyists. The caliber of photographs submitted was extremely impressive and it was difficult for the panel of judges to narrow the submissions down to one winner.

The entries were judged on attention to detail, creativity, quality, historical relevance, originality, and unique, “eye-catching”, perspective.  We are pleased to announce that Jeanne Caron, of Winterport, has been awarded top honors for her striking photo of the All Souls Church on Broadway. Caron captured a warm and welcoming photo that stood out from the rest, and amplified the unique and historical architectural beauty of Bangor.  Her photo will be printed in an upcoming issue of Bangor Metro.

Submissions from three photographer’s stood out and the Judges have awarded them with an Honorable Mention; Bobbie Jo Mclain, Hampden, for her unique perspective of Columbia Street Church. Edner Mae Fago, Brewer, for her very texture oriented photo of a door on Main Street, and Greg Bennett, Hampden, for his detailed shot of the Bangor Public Library.

View all winning photos on our facebook page.

All photographs submitted are eligible for use in future Downtown Bangor publications including brochures, website, social media and more.  An online gallery will be set up so all photographs can be viewed in the coming weeks.  Due to the high quality of work the committee is also considering ways to publicly display the photographs in the future.

Farmers' Market
February 28, 2012

Bangor Farmers' Market to Open June 3, 2012.

The City of Bangor and the Bangor Farmers’ Market Association have agreed to terms of a lease which will allow the Bangor Farmers’ Market to operate in the Abbot Square parking lot on Sundays from 12-3 PM.  The goal of the market is to serve the citizens of Bangor while limiting competition with other area markets.

There is currently no Sunday market in the region; association members feel that Sundays are an untapped market day that will draw new customers and reach those that are not able to attend other area markets during the work week.  An online survey generated more than 400 responses from those that self identified as Sunday market-goers, 85% of respondents indicated they would prefer to attend the market in a downtown location.

The group considered several factors when selecting a location for the market; 120 parking spaces are needed to accommodate vendor parking and display as well as customer parking.  Factors such as visibility, traffic counts and survey results and proximity to residential areas were also considered in selecting a site for the market.  Abbot Square on the corner of Harlow and Franklin Streets, and across from the Bangor Public Library, met all location criteria.

The Bangor Farmers' Market will open on Sunday June 3, 2012 and run through the month of November.  Those interested in joining the market should visit their temporary webpage.  Applications are due April 1, 2012.  Community members seeking more information should visit the market facebook page.
