This weekend in Downtown Bangor is so action-packed, you may want to grab a pencil to write all of this down. Ready?
SATURDAY! Erin's Run, an annual 5k walk/race along the Waterfront to benefit #SpruceRun and #UMaine scholarships, kicks off at 10am. (There is still time to register tonight at Hero's, or tomorrow morning at the race.) It's Free Comic Book Day 2016 at Top Shelf Comics Bangor -- good timing, seeing as there is a big comic book movie opening in theatres this weekend as well! Learn how to homebrew on a variety of systems and skill levels at Big Brew Year Three: National Homebrew Day, hosted by Central Street Farmhouse. Up the street, Husson University is graduating at the Cross Insurance Center. Head over to Maine Discovery Museum for the Bicycle Safety Rodeo. And of course the aforementioned Kid Central!
It is worth noting that MDOT will be working on the I-395 overpass repair this weekend -- please, take it slow, budget some extra time to get to your destination, and enjoy this crazy little slice of the world that we call home! (The sun should be out for at least part of the day, so stop and enjoy that for a moment, no matter how fleeting.)
SUNDAY! It's #MothersDay, so take your favorite lady out for a meal, for goodness' sake! Special brunch menu at the fiddlehead restaurant, lunch menu at Evenrood's, and brunch buffet at Sea Dog Brewing Company Bangor are but a few of your dining options downtown. The kids eat free at Hero's Sports Grill & Entertainment Center with the purchase of an adult entree! And if you're hosting mom at home, swing by Bangor Wine and Cheese Company to grab a bottle of her favorite wine or beer.

BangPop! presents the sixth annual Kid Central Festival in Downtown Bangor on Saturday, May 7. With the help of local businesses, museums and other arts organizations, families will enjoy a wealth of fun and free activities both indoors and outside. From music to crafts, face painting to building your own cannoli, there are activities for everyone ages 12 and under. Kid Central Festival begins at 10 am and continues until 3 pm. Full schedule information is available at www.KidCentralFest.com.
Families begin the day at Kid Central Headquarters, located at Bagel Central’s Meeting House at 33 Central Street, where you can pick up a Kid Central map and schedule to help you on your way and enter to win one of many giveaways. Maine children’s author Lynn Plourde is our special guest this year and will be reading and signing copies of her newest book, You’re Doing THAT in the Talent Show?!
Kids can also participate in our first-ever Kid Central Talent Show thanks to our Play All Day sponsor, Darling’s. Whether they have a knack for singing, playing the ukulele, hula hooping, dancing or have master yoyo skills, we invite kids to show off their special talents on the Darling’s Children Pavilion in Norumbega Parkway.
Some of the other businesses and organizations offering activities include: a scavenger hunt through downtown with Explore Bangor; henna tattoos at Mexicali Blues; and learning to grow their own food starting with the One Tomato Project courtesy of the Bangor Area Food Council. Many other great activities are planned throughout the day including the annual Kids Superhero Costume Contest. This year’s event would not be possible without the support of our Sharing & Caring sponsors, Beal College and the Downtown Bangor Partnership, as well as our Show & Tell media sponsor, The Bangor Daily News. All activities are free to the public and designed for children ages 12 and under. Please see www.KidCentralFest.com for the full listing.
