About the Downtown Bangor Partnership
Encouraging a vibrant and distinctive downtown.
In the early 1980s the City of Bangor created the “Bangor Center Development District” was along with the Bangor Center Management Corporation (now Downtown Bangor Partnership) to aid with downtown revitalization. Today the Downtown Bangor Partnership is non-profit organization managed by a board of directors that represent downtown property owners, business owners, employees and residents. The mission of the Downtown Bangor Partnership is to promote and market activities that enhance the distinctive identity of downtown Bangor which encourages retention and growth of commercial, residential, and cultural life within the downtown district.
As a result of the “Bangor Center Development District” a Special Assessment was levied on property owners in the district (see map). These funds provide the Downtown Bangor Partnership’s primary funding. The special assessment rate is currently $0.53 per $1,000 worth of property value. These funds, generally just over $50,000/year, make up the Downtown Bangor Partnership’s budget for beautification, marketing and promotion, events, public safety support, staffing and administration. The Downtown Bangor Partnership also relies upon the support of the local business community to sponsor events and beautification activities. An annual report, work plan and budget are presented to the City Council each May/June for approval. This process involves public hearings and the opportunity for public comment.
