Downtown offers an array of arts and cultural experiences you may not expect from a small city. Bangorís longstanding history creates an exciting background for your visit. Here you will find everything from historic buildings to modern museums; professional theatre to artistsí studios; free concerts to large festivals and so much more!
American Folk Festival - The American Folk Festival is a large-scale, three-day event. Held each year at the end of August in downtown Bangor, Maine, the Festival presents the music and dance from the many cultures that make up America today.
Bangor Arts - Experience the richness of Bangor's music, dance, theater, art, film, libraries and museums. We offer year-round programming for every age and taste - from classical to cutting edge. Whether you're a visitor or call the greater Bangor region home, we invite you to discover and enjoy the excitement of Bangor Arts!
Bangor Art Society - A lively group of artists that gather once a month to host guest artists and speakers, plan projects and events, share our work, and enjoy fellowship. Meetings are fourth Tuesday of each month from 6-8 pm at Bangor Public Library Lecture Room. We do not meet June through August.
Bangor Book Festival - Brings renowned authors to Downtown Bangor to read & discuss their work and to meet & talk with Maine readers, writers and fans. Events include storytelling, book discussions and readings; traditionally held the first weekend in October.
Bangor Greendrinks - Building community around green businesses, organizations and ideas in the Bangor Region; Greendrinks hosts fun gatherings of green-minded people on the second Tuesday of every month in a Bangor-area location. Greendrinks often hosts events in Downtown Bangor.
Bangor Public Library - Home to 500,000+ books and materials the Bangor Public Library Provides reading material in a variety of formats, hosts local meetings & forums, offers display space for historical & contemporary artists, teaches basic computer skills, provides Internet service for public use, sponsors reading groups & contests, offers story times for children & their parents, hosts concerts & recitals, answers reference questions & offers research assistance and more.
Downtown Bangor Arts Collaborative - The Downtown Bangor Arts Collaborative (DBAC) promotes cultural awareness in the city of Bangor, Maine through arts-related events and educational programming. Since the fall of 2008, the Downtown Bangor Artwalk has been a mainstay of the Bangor arts scene. This free, Friday night open studio tour draws crowds in the hundreds downtown to meet local artists, and to spend a night on the town shopping, dining and socializing.
Kid Central Festival - Discover Downtown fun for all ages with free activities at local businesses throughout the day. Music, face painting, games, food, arts and crafts and much more; traditionally held in May.
KahBang - The KahBang Music-Art-Film Festival is not just another annual arts festival; it is a brand. A brand built on discovering the next big thing; traditionally held in August of each year prior to the American Folk Festival.
Maine Discovery Museum - The largest children's museum north of Boston serves to educate children and families, encourage creativity, nurture a sense of wonder, and to challenge all to learn in new and innovative ways. Exhibits and programs are fun, interactive and thought provoking, and encourage participation by children and families of all abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
River City Cinema - Brings diverse films to the Bangor region, educates the public about the art and history of cinema and encourages filmmaking in Northeastern Maine. River City Cinema shows films year-round in venues around Downtown Bangor. During the summer months River City Cinema hosts a weekly outdoor film series.
Robinson Ballet - Robinson Ballet is a highly respected dance company that enhances our community by reaching out to educate, inspire and involve people of all ages by providing opportunities to create and experience quality dance. Robinson Ballet offers dance education and performances year-round.
University of Maine Museum of Art - The University of Maine Museum of Art enriches the cultural life of the citizens of Maine and University community through exhibitions, collections and innovative educational programming designed to promote an understanding of the visual arts with particular emphasis on the modern and contemporary. The Museum of Art remains the only institution owned by the citizens of the State of Maine to house a permanent fine arts collection- consisting of more than 6500 original works of art.
West Market Festival - A day of amazing talent in music, art & fashion in downtown Bangor; traditionally held the first Saturday in June.
Waterfront Concert Series - During the summer of 2010 Waterfront Concerts turned a city park into a concert pavilion. Considered to be the largest concert series in Maine ever, The 2010 series of events brought acts like; Alan Jackson, Jason Mraz, Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert & Godsmack. The series continues to be popular every year, as acts perform on a large, covered stage on the Bangor Waterfront throughout the summer. All shows are rain or shine.
